Nigeria, Germany to strengthen defence ties on insecurity

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Ibrahim Kana, has announced plans to enhance the defence partnership between Nigeria and Germany through a new cycle of projects by the German Technical Advisory Group (GTAG).

Mr Kana made this statement during a meeting with a high-level GTAG delegation, led by Marcus Ohm, at Ship House, Abuja.

Expressing his satisfaction with the renewed collaboration, Mr Kana said, “I am happy to accept the new project cycle, and I promise we are going to sustain it.”

The Permanent Secretary highlighted the Nigerian government’s progress since GTAG’s last visit, noting the development of a framework to improve coordination, planning, and execution of defence initiatives.

He emphasised the importance of modernizing the Nigerian Armed Forces through enhanced intelligence sharing, equipment upgrades, capacity building, and the involvement of Nigerian personnel in project planning for sustainability.

In response, Mr Ohm expressed satisfaction with the progress made, stating, “The project is going in the right direction,” and reiterated Germany’s commitment to delivering successful initiatives.

The meeting underscored the mutual benefits of collaboration, with both nations pledging transparency, dedication, and strengthened cooperation to tackle security challenges effectively.

This renewed partnership signals a step forward in addressing insecurity and enhancing Nigeria’s defence capabilities.
