The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has voiced strong opposition to a recent initiative by the House of Representatives aimed at amending the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act to permit its personnel to carry firearms.
NAUS argues that this proposal is a serious threat to the safety and rights of Nigerian citizens, particularly students and young people.
The organization emphasizes that the FRSC’s primary role is to promote road safety and not to act as an armed enforcement agency.
“We are appalled by this decision, which undermines the fundamental rights of citizens,”
“Arming FRSC personnel will likely result in increased harassment, intimidation, and potential violence against innocent Nigerians.” stated Ologe John (Bosco), the NAUS National Director for Campus Intervention.
The association has called on the House of Representatives to reconsider the proposed amendment and focus on alternative measures to improve road safety, such as enhanced training for personnel, infrastructure improvements, and community engagement initiatives.
Key Concerns:
1. Harassment and Intimidation: The potential for increased abuse of power against citizens.
2. Human Rights Risks: Concerns over possible violations of individual rights.
3. Misalignment with FRSC’s Mission: Arming personnel contradicts the agency’s primary responsibility.
4. Lack of Public Input: Insufficient consultation with stakeholders and the public on this significant change.
Recommendations:
1. Reversal of the Proposal: Immediate withdrawal of the initiative to arm FRSC personnel.
2. Stakeholder Engagement: Involvement of relevant parties to explore safer alternatives.
3. Enhanced Training: Focus on non-violent conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques for FRSC staff.
NAUS is rallying Nigerian students, youth, and concerned citizens to stand against this policy change.
The association remains committed to advocating for the protection of human rights and the safety of its members.
