A prominent lawmaker has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to launch immediate awareness campaigns to prepare citizens for the impending deadline of December 31, 2024. Following a Supreme Court ruling, the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes will no longer be considered legal tender as of January 1, 2025.

The lawmaker emphasized the importance of timely communication, stating that the CBN should have initiated public awareness campaigns—such as jingles, television and radio announcements, social media posts, flyers, daily newspaper ads, and magazine publications—three months prior to the deadline.

With only two months remaining, concerns are growing about the lack of preparedness and communication from the apex bank.

The lawmaker’s call highlights the need for proactive measures to ensure that citizens are fully informed about the changes, which could significantly impact daily transactions and economic activities across the country.

The absence of visible campaigns raises questions about the CBN’s readiness to manage the transition effectively.

As the deadline approaches, stakeholders are calling for urgent action to avoid confusion and ensure a smooth currency transition for all Nigerians.
