Ukraine Deal Collapses as Trump, Zelenskyy Clash in Heated White House Meeting
Washington, D.C. – A highly anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ended in acrimony, leading to the cancellation of a potential Ukraine-Russia ceasefire deal and a mineral trade agreement. The abrupt fallout, marked by a tense verbal exchange, has deepened uncertainty over Ukraine’s future and the United States’ role in the ongoing war with Russia.
Zelenskyy arrived in Washington seeking to secure security guarantees and finalize a mineral trade deal with the U.S. as part of efforts to bolster Ukraine’s economy amid the prolonged war with Russia. However, the discussions quickly spiralled into a public spat in the Oval Office, with Trump accusing Zelenskyy of disrespecting the United States and leveraging American support to negotiate from a position of power.
“You don’t have the cards right now with us. You start having problems right now,” U.S. Vice President JD Vance bluntly told Zelenskyy, suggesting that Ukraine lacked the manpower and resources to continue fighting without U.S. aid.
Zelenskyy, in turn, challenged Trump’s stance on Russia, urging him to take a firmer position against Russian President Vladimir Putin. “No compromises with a killer,” he insisted, dismissing the idea of a hasty peace deal that lacked security guarantees for Ukraine.
Trump Cancels Deal, Calls Zelenskyy ‘Disrespectful’
Following the confrontation, Trump took to his Truth Social platform, announcing that the proposed agreements were off the table.
“I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for peace if America is involved because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage; I want PEACE.”
Trump further accused Zelenskyy of disrespecting the Oval Office and declared that the Ukrainian leader could return “when he is ready for peace.”
