As General Yakubu Gowon marks his 90th birthday today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid heartfelt tribute to the former head of state, lauding his remarkable contributions to Nigeria and his enduring legacy as a leader.

General Gowon, who served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1966 to 1975, is celebrated as one of the country’s longest-serving leaders. Trained at the prestigious Sandhurst military academy, he assumed leadership at the young age of 32, a journey that has inspired many Nigerians.

In his tribute, President Tinubu described Gowon as a “gentleman extraordinaire,” acknowledging his significant role in nation-building and development.

He emphasised Gowon’s pivotal contributions to the nation’s infrastructure and his unifying philosophy of “No victor, no vanquished” following the Nigerian Civil War, which fostered national healing and reconciliation.

Among his most notable achievements is establishing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1975, which continues to play a crucial role in regional cooperation.

President Tinubu noted that General Gowon has been a trusted counselor during his presidency, particularly in navigating recent diplomatic challenges with Sahelian states.

His calls for moderation and unity have been instrumental in maintaining harmony within ECOWAS.

Beyond his political legacy, Gowon’s commitment to personal growth is highlighted by his ongoing pursuit of knowledge and his “Nigeria Prays” initiative, which promotes prayer and intercession for national peace and stability.

The President concluded by expressing gratitude for Gowon’s service to Nigeria and emphasising that his example serves as a beacon of hope for current and future leaders.

He wished the elder statesman continued wisdom, good health, and many more years to contribute to Nigeria and humanity.

As the nation celebrates this milestone, General Gowon’s legacy remains firmly embedded in the hearts of many, exemplifying dedication, unity, and service.
