The Federal Government (FG) has unveiled a series of initiatives and priorities designed to enhance food production and ensure food security across the nation.
These measures were highlighted during the 46th meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security, held in Calabar, Cross River State.
Speaking at the event, the Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari detailed key actions being taken to strengthen the agricultural sector.
He noted that priority efforts include the delivery of agro-inputs to farmers, the repositioning of agricultural institutions, and fostering deeper engagement among farmers, herders, and communities.
“As part of these initiatives, we are collaborating on water resource irrigation schemes, soil fertility enhancement, and the establishment of laboratories in research institutes,” Kyari explained.
“We are also repositioning universities, faculties, and colleges to ensure they contribute meaningfully to agricultural development.”
The Minister stressed the importance of the council meeting as a platform to assess existing policies, programmes, and projects at both national and sub-national levels.
He urged participants to embrace inclusiveness, transparency, and partnerships to drive collective growth in agribusiness.
Representing Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, Deputy Governor Peter Odey pledged continued support for smallholder farmers through agricultural inputs and financial grants.
He affirmed the state government’s commitment to partnering with the Federal Government to implement President Bola Tinubu’s agricultural policies aimed at achieving food and nutritional security.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, also addressed the gathering, emphasising the role of infrastructure, technology, and entrepreneurship in unlocking the potential of the agricultural sector.
He highlighted the need for sectoral linkages and social inclusion to achieve sustainable food security.
The event was attended by state commissioners of agriculture, permanent secretaries, development partners, investors, and representatives of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria.
A highlight of the meeting was the recognition and awards given to farmers and stakeholders who had distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to the agricultural sector.
This annual council meeting continues to serve as a vital forum for fostering synergy and innovation in Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.
