Expect new minimum wage this month, Aiyedatiwa assures workers

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has announced that the new minimum wage of ₦73,000 for civil servants in the state will take effect starting in November.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the governor made this announcement during the 2024 Public Service Week celebration, which included a fitness walk to promote the health and well-being of public workers.

Civil servants, accompanied by labour leaders, participated in a walk through various parts of the state capital before gathering at the Government House, where they expressed their support for the governor ahead of the upcoming governorship election on November 16.

Governor Aiyedatiwa reiterated that the welfare of civil servants remains a top priority for his administration. He described the new minimum wage as a significant achievement and a clear reflection of his commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the state’s workforce.

Furthermore, the governor revealed that a committee has been established to determine the implementation structure of the new minimum wage. With the committee’s work now concluded, he stated that he would provide the necessary approval for payments to commence.

“Anything we have done for civil servants has never been politically driven. If workers are not happy, they won’t be encouraged to put maximum effort into their work. That is why we have always prioritised their welfare”, the governor said.

Governor Aiyedatiwa assured civil servants that, if elected, he would exceed his current achievements, pledging to set new benchmarks in delivering even greater benefits for the workforce.

He expressed gratitude for their solidarity and reaffirmed his identity as the state’s foremost public servant.

During the event, the Head of Service, Bayo Philips, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for fostering a supportive environment for civil servants throughout the state.

He highlighted the administration’s dedication to timely salary payments, regular promotions, leave bonuses, and the consistent disbursement of pensions and gratuities.

The Head of Service emphasised that the civil servants present were not politicians; rather, they gathered to express their appreciation for the governor’s unwavering commitment to their welfare.

Additionally, Comrade Clement Fatuase, State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, conveyed his confidence in Governor Aiyedatiwa’s ongoing support for civil servants, assuring him that they would proudly rally on November 17 to celebrate his victory.
