The Edo State Government has raised alarm over rising insecurity allegedly fueled by armed thugs linked to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement issued yesterday, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration accused PDP leaders of shielding criminals who still possess over 5,000 illegal firearms.

According to the government, these weapons were stockpiled before the 2024 Edo Governorship Election, but rather than surrender them, the armed groups have continued to perpetrate robbery, kidnapping, and violent attacks across the state.

The statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, referenced a pre-election remark by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, in which he allegedly threatened that “Nigeria would burn.”

The government claims this was more than political rhetoric, describing it as a coordinated effort to arm thugs and touts under the cover of the Edo State Security Network.

“The Edo State Government is aware that PDP leaders, who had direct control over these armed operatives, have refused to assist in disarming them.

“Instead, they continue to shield these criminals, providing them with cover as they unleash terror on innocent citizens,” the statement read.

Additionally, the government alleges that intelligence reports indicate PDP leaders are stockpiling more arms in preparation for possible violence if their candidate, Asue Ighodalo, does not emerge victorious at the Election Tribunal.

Governor Okpebholo’s administration has called on security agencies to launch immediate investigations, track down the alleged armed criminals, and bring their sponsors to justice.

“No individual, regardless of political affiliation, is above the law, and Edo State will not tolerate any attempt to destabilize the peace and security of our people,” the government declared.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Edo residents, stressing that politically motivated violence will not be allowed to thrive in the state.

Security agencies are yet to officially respond to the allegations.
