The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that its operatives intercepted nine trucks loaded with smuggled rice in Ogun State.

Disclosing the feat during a press briefing in Lagos on Monday, the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Kola Oladeji, disclosed that the operation was carried out by officers under the FOU Zone A, who successfully prevented the smugglers from bringing the goods into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin.

The officer said the smugglers abandoned their vehicles and fled upon sighting the operatives.

The confiscated rice was subsequently transported to the Customs warehouse using six additional buses and 11 patrol vehicles mobilized by the command.

The interception highlights the NCS’s ongoing efforts to curb smuggling activities and enforce border regulations.

Oladeji said, “And, when our officers realized this, in compliance with our strategy of not shooting at any smugglers, they hired trucks and used some of our patrol vehicles to convey the items here.

“A breakdown of the vehicles used for conveying the seized bags of rice from the locations were nine trucks, six buses, and 11 patrol vehicles owned by the Nigeria Customs.”
