The Murtala Muhammed Airport Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported an impressive revenue collection of N180.75 billion from cargoes imported into the country in 2024.
This marks a significant 99.89% increase compared to the N90.43 billion generated in 2023.
At a press conference held at the command’s headquarters in Lagos, Command Area Controller Michael Awe highlighted that the total revenue generated surpassed the set target of N179.74 billion for the year, with an additional N1.01 billion achieved, reflecting a 0.56% increase over the target.
Awe praised the command’s performance, noting that the revenue boost demonstrated a strong commitment to fiscal discipline and adherence to government policies.
“This achievement shows our unwavering dedication to excellence and our constant efforts to enforce the government’s fiscal policies,” he said.
In addition to the remarkable revenue figures, the Murtala Muhammed Airport Command also made significant strides in safeguarding the nation by intercepting a wide range of contraband valued at N10.51 billion.
These seizures included illicit goods such as drones, military hardware, narcotics, and endangered species products.
Notably, the command seized 225 drones, 250 turtles, 21 packages of Tramadol Hydrochloride, 50 rounds of live ammunition, and 54 packages of military hardware.
Other seized contraband items included 46 packages of dried sea cucumbers, three packages of dried donkey male genitals, 55 pieces of Jojef Tomahawk semi-automatic rifles, 50 packages of dried Canadian cannabis, and a package containing porcupine, thorns, and mineral stones.
“These seized items have a cumulative Duty-Paid Value of N10.51 billion,” Awe stated, emphasising the command’s ongoing efforts to uphold the nation’s customs laws and protect its citizens from illicit trade.
Looking ahead, Awe affirmed that the command would continue to innovate and strategise to meet its revenue targets while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
The focus will remain on facilitating trade, enforcing customs regulations, and ensuring that any loopholes are effectively addressed to further strengthen the nation’s economic security.
