The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has called on Nigerians to embrace the spirit of reflection, sacrifice, and unity as the country grapples with economic and security challenges.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Archbishop Okoh extended his prayers and goodwill to Nigerians of all faiths, noting that the Lenten season offers an opportunity for national renewal and collective healing.

“Lent is a 40-day journey of sacrifice, prayer, and charity, echoing the time Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, spent fasting in the wilderness (Luke 4:1-2). For us in Nigeria, this season arrives amid challenges—rising living costs, insecurity, and daily struggles to put food on the table,” the statement read.

Acknowledging the hardships many Nigerians face, Okoh highlighted that Lent offers a time for reflection on what truly matters and encourages a collective spirit of hope.

He added, “Lent calls us to hope, urging us to look beyond our hardships and draw strength from faith and community.”

He likened the sacrifices made during Lent to the everyday resilience of Nigerian families—mothers stretching meals, fathers working tirelessly, and children praying for a better future.

While encouraging Christians to approach the season with sincerity, Archbishop Okoh also urged Nigerians of all religious backgrounds to embrace the spirit of renewal during this time.

“Let us use these 40 days to deepen our love for one another, pray for peace in our land, and work together for a Nigeria where justice and dignity prevail,” he said.

The CAN President also called for prayers for leaders to govern with wisdom, for the youth to find purpose and opportunity, and for unity to rise above divisions.

He concluded his message with a hopeful prayer: “May this Ash Wednesday mark the beginning of a transformative journey for us all. May God bless you and our dear country, Nigeria.”
