Two months have passed since the devastating flooding that destroyed the medium security custodial centre in Maiduguri, resulting in the escape of 281 prisoners. Despite efforts to recapture the convicts, 278 of these convicts remain unaccounted for.
The flooding that happened on the 10th of September brought down the walls of the correctional facilities and staff quarters, forcing the prisoners to flee for their safety.
Abubakar Umar, spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), attributed the challenge to the destructive impact of the flood on the facility.
“We are working tirelessly with sister security agencies to rearrest the escaped inmates,” Umar said.
The state police command has progressed, re-arresting three escapees: Auwalu Aminu, Abubakar Mohammed, and Kyari Kur. Kur was apprehended on 10 October in Gubio town following credible intelligence.
The ongoing search has raised concerns about public safety and potential increased crime rates. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
“The police assure the public of their commitment to ensuring the recapture of the remaining escapees and maintaining law and order,” said Nahum Daso, state Police Public Relations Officer.
The Borno jailbreak highlights the need for enhanced security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Authorities must prioritize infrastructure upgrades and emergency preparedness to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
As the search continues, the NCS and law enforcement agencies are working to reassure the public of their dedication to maintaining public safety.
