The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political organisation, Afenifere, has expressed its pride and admiration for Ademola Lookman following his recent accolade as the African Player of the Year.
The organisation lauded the 27-year-old for his achievement, his inspiring speech, and his exemplary conduct during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) award ceremony in Morocco on Monday, December 16.
In a statement issued by Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, in Ibadan, Oyo State, the group congratulated Lookman on his success, marking his entry into the ranks of Nigerians who have won the prestigious award in recent years.
“Afenifere is proud of this young man. Not just for identifying with his roots, but also for comporting himself so well and serving as a source of inspiration for the younger generation,” Ajayi stated.
Afenifere also extended its congratulations to the Super Falcons for being named the Best Women’s National Team of the Year, and to Chiamaka Nnadozie, who won Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year 2024.
Ajayi highlighted Lookman’s display of Yoruba heritage during the award ceremony, where he wore a traditional flowing Agbada and began his acceptance speech with a heartfelt salutation in Yoruba.
“The demonstration of patriotism before a global audience was impressive,” Ajayi noted.
Furthermore, Afenifere commended Lookman for sharing his personal struggles and how he overcame them to achieve success. His motivational message to the youth, urging them not to be discouraged by failures, resonated strongly with many.
“We are happy about his choice to play for Nigeria and being proud of it,” Ajayi added.
Ajayi also praised Lookman’s parents for nurturing their son’s connection to his roots, even as he stood at the pinnacle of his career.
“Lookman’s saga is a testament that with the right attitude, hard work, and determination, one can overcome challenges and attain great heights,” he said.
He further called on parents to support their children’s ambitions and urged the government to foster an environment that encourages citizens to aspire for success at all levels.
