Maternal health experts are increasingly alarmed by the rising trend of pregnant women, particularly among younger mothers, opting for tight-fitting clothing, warning that this fashion choice could adversely affect pregnancy outcomes.

According to health professionals, wearing restrictive clothing during pregnancy subjects mothers-to-be to unnecessary pressure and may even lead to premature contractions.

This could have serious implications for both the mother and the developing fetus. One key concern is that tight clothing may restrict the baby’s movement within the womb, which is critical for the infant’s growth and development.

The PUNCH HealthWise in its report stated that Ijeoma Igim, a midwife based in Lagos, expressed her concern about this.

She noted that many pregnant women are increasingly choosing fashionable yet uncomfortable attire, which neglects the potential health risks associated with tight clothing.

“I often see numerous pregnant women during our antenatal clinics showing up in tight jeans and fitted clothes,” she said.

“Many times, these jeans are so constrictive around their waists that they can impede the baby’s freedom of movement. It is crucial for babies in the womb to have the ability to move freely; they should not be restricted.”

Igim is particularly worried about the trend she observes among women in their20s. She is quick to advise them to opt for looser, more comfortable clothing that allows the baby to rest peacefully.

Unfortunately, some women disregard this advice, choosing instead to wear short skirts and blouses that fit tightly, which accentuates their bodies.

In some cases, the tightness of the garments is such that the movement of the fetus can visibly reflect outside the clothing.

The midwife also indicated that some of the complaints voiced by young pregnant women, particularly those regarding discomfort under their abdomen, may be linked to their choice of tight-fitting jeans.

“Tight clothing naturally constrains movement. When these women come in for antenatal visits, it is evident that they are not as comfortable as they should be,” she explained.

“The pressure of tight clothing can elevate stress levels during pregnancy; pressure is not conducive to a healthy pregnancy,”

Igim stresses that expecting mothers require comfort and ease, suggesting that being under physical pressure can exacerbate issues such as morning sickness and, in severe cases, could provoke premature contractions.

In advising her patients, Igim urges young mothers to make the necessary wardrobe adjustments.

“As soon as you find out that you are pregnant, prepare to set aside your old clothes until after you deliver,” she emphasizes.

“Wearing tight clothes, especially among young mothers, should be avoided at all costs. Some may argue that their spouses prefer it, but the health of the baby should always come first.”

The American Pregnancy Association also warns of the dangers associated with wearing tight, non-breathable clothing, particularly the increased risk of vaginal yeast infections, which can be exacerbated by the hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy.

The body undergoes significant alterations during pregnancy due to hormonal influences, which help accommodate the growing uterus.

The loosening of ligaments and an increase in the capacity of the abdominal cavity can be impeded by tight clothing, leading to discomfort.

Constipation is another common issue among pregnant women, and wearing constrictive garments may exacerbate this condition. Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Meenakshi Ahuja concurs with these sentiments.

Although there isn’t a specific study indicating that wearing jeans during pregnancy is harmful, she advises against tight clothing due to the potential hindrance to blood circulation, an essential factor for both mother and baby.

During the second and third trimesters, when the baby bump becomes pronounced, many women tend to prefer tighter clothing to conceal their condition.

This practice, however, is unwise and can have several negative health repercussions that deserve careful consideration.
