Baku COP Presidencies Continuity Coalition for Climate and Health, a new coalition, has pledged to boost health-climate commitment for quality healthcare delivery.
The new coalition was formed during the United Nations Climate Change Conference Baku (COP29).
WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said, “This initiative unites the visionary leadership of five COP presidencies that span this critical time for action, underscoring a commitment to elevate health within the climate agenda.”
Explaining the agenda of the new coalition, Dr. Ghebreyesus said, “This coalition represents a collective will to prioritise climate and health now and for the future.”
The new coalition was co-led by Azerbaijan, Brazil, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, along with WHO.
Speaking on their aim and objectives, they seek to provide a long-term solution to drive impactful health outcomes from past climate commitments.
Adding that, “By bridging efforts across COP presidencies, the coalition reinforces sustained action and ensures ongoing momentum on critical health priorities as COP30 approaches.”
Highlighting their achievements and strategic objectives during discussion, which aligned with the first Health Day at COP28, include operationalising climate-health financing and climate-health synergy success stories.
Other discussions include scaling innovative financing mechanisms and strengthening country-level collaboration.
COP29 President Mukhtar Babaye emphasised their agenda in improving human lives, describing it as a “synergistic action on climate and health.”

The coalition assured their committee for present and in future endeavours.
The conference was held in Spain, Azerbaijan, and the COP29 Presidency.
According to the host, the World Health Organisation (WHO), on Monday, the conference marked a significant archivement in health and climate change improvement.
COP29 agenda aligned with the previous UN COPs effort to preserve and protect human health as the fight against climate change continues.
During the event, leaders emphasised the need for continuity and synergy in climate-health initiatives, as they pledged to execute more action as it aligned with the previous agenda.
The document noted the signing of the Letter of Intent was officially established.
“We urge future presidencies to consider how they will account for health at future COPs,” said Babayev.
Adding further, it was noted that the newly formed coalition for climate and health will serve as a guide for global health-climate initiatives aiming at COP30 and the future.
