The Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has urged the Federal Government (FG) to prioritise the needs of marginalised groups, including the person with albinism, as the nation plans ahead of the 2025 Global Disability Summit (GDS).

The programme scheduled to be held in April aims to address issues of inclusion, equity, and accessibility for persons living with disabilities.

This appeal was made on Wednesday by the Executive Director of AAN, Dr. Bisi Bamishe, in a project launch tagged “Voices from the Field—From Commitment to Action: Implementing the Global Disability Summit Pledges for Persons with Albinism.”

According to Dr. Bamishe, the aim of the initiative is to ensure inclusive commitments from FG.

She said, “We want pledges that truly reflect the needs and aspirations of persons with albinism and other marginalised groups.”

“The real work begins after the summit. Our mission is to ensure these promises don’t remain mere rhetoric. The post-summit phase is about action, accountability, and delivering meaningful results that positively impact lives.”

The association highlighted the persistent challenges faced by persons with albinism in Nigeria, which include stigmatisation, discrimination, and others.

Calling for key collaboration from the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), among others, she stressed the need and importance of a joint voice to effectively implement equitable policies and decisions.

“We aim to foster awareness, advocate for inclusive policies, and ensure the effective implementation of GDS pledges at the grassroots level.”
