Spyro: Banky W told me proclaiming Christ affected his career

Afrobeats singer Spyro has opened up about the struggles he faces in the Nigerian music industry because of his public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ.

During an interview with Echoo Room, the artist shared details of a conversation with Banky W, the renowned R&B star who later became a pastor.

Spyro recounted how Banky W warned him about the obstacles that come with openly embracing Christianity. “He told me to be sure I was ready for this path,” Spyro said. “Banky explained that as a ‘bad boy,’ everything seemed smooth. But the moment he chose to follow God, the challenges started piling up.”

Discrimination in the music industry
Spyro highlighted how his “Jesus boy” brand has led to significant challenges. “My biggest challenge right now is the lack of support,” he stated. “Once I declared my faith, I noticed a shift. People started treating me differently. It’s as if the system is set up to pull you down when you stand for Christ.”

The singer expressed frustration over the minimal recognition and promotion he receives compared to other artists. “If you’re honest with yourself, how many media moguls support me or post my songs?” he asked. “They promote others who are not performing as well as I am. But when it comes to me, it’s crickets, except for the blogs I pay to post my work.”

Facing criticism as a ‘Jesus Boy’
Spyro acknowledged that his faith-driven brand has sparked backlash. “I’ve received the biggest criticisms just for being a ‘Jesus boy.’ It’s tough to navigate an industry that doesn’t seem to favor those who openly declare Christ,” he said. “Sometimes, I ask myself why this is happening. The answer is clear—it’s because I chose to stand for something bigger.”

The ‘War’ of declaring Christ
The singer reflected on Banky W’s perspective, emphasizing the challenges of public faith. “Banky told me the moment you declare Christ, you’re stepping into a battlefield. It’s not just about making music anymore; it’s about standing firm in your beliefs despite the opposition,” Spyro explained.

He also shared how Banky W’s shift from a “bad boy” persona to a more godly image triggered resistance in the industry. “Banky said the war started when he decided to follow God,” Spyro recalled.

Standing strong despite challenges
Despite these obstacles, Spyro remains committed to his faith. He believes staying true to his principles is more important than conforming to an industry that often prioritizes trends over values.

Spyro’s story sheds light on the struggles faced by artists who stand for their faith in a highly competitive and secular industry. His journey is a reminder of the strength and resolve needed to maintain one’s beliefs while navigating the pressures of fame and success.

An inspiring message
In a world where conformity often seems like the easiest path, Spyro’s choice to publicly proclaim Christ is both bold and inspiring.

Whether or not the industry fully supports him, his unwavering faith continues to define his artistry and message.
