Nigerian rapper Reminisce has opened up about the importance of setting boundaries and maintaining healthy relationships within the entertainment industry.
In a recent interview with Naija FM, the rapper, known for his candid approach, stressed the need for vigilance, emphasizing that not everyone in the industry is a genuine friend.
Reminisce reflected on his early experiences with fame and how they shaped his cautious outlook. He revealed that his journey taught him a crucial lesson: “Nobody is my friend” in the music industry.
This actuality, he explained, was instrumental in helping him navigate the often complex relationships that come with fame.
He pointed out that people in the industry can quickly turn against you, especially when money is involved.
Advising aspiring artists, Reminisce highlighted the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and understanding who fits into their inner circle. “Not everyone around you wants you to succeed,” he cautioned. “It’s essential to set clear boundaries to protect yourself and your interests.”
He further elaborated that one of the biggest mistakes an artist can make is to confuse kindness and helpful gestures for genuine friendship. “Being kind and helpful doesn’t mean someone is truly on your side,” he said, warning against misinterpreting these actions. Reminisce described fame as a powerful force that can cloud judgment, making it easy for artists to lose sight of reality and trust the wrong people.
“Fame is a drug that gets one high and clouds judgment,” he stated. “One of the things I did early on was to realize that nobody is my friend. That’s probably why some people don’t like me. If you hear about someone who worked with me, and you find out we had issues, it’s likely because I made my decision and stood by it. At the end of the day, I’m the one who suffers the consequences.”
Reminisce also touched on the fickle nature of relationships in the entertainment world.
“When it comes to humans, they can turn against you if they don’t feel favoured, especially when money is involved,” he explained. He shared that it took him a while to achieve fame, and even before that, he had already started a family. These life experiences helped him understand the dynamics of the industry.
“The first thing I came to understand is that nobody is your friend,” he reiterated. “You can be kind, and you can assist, but the first mistake you can make in this music industry is thinking everyone is your friend. Nobody is your friend.”
The rapper pointed out that competition is inherent in the industry, and artists are all striving for the same goals.
“We all want the same thing, so it’s unrealistic to think everyone is your friend. It’s very normal to have people around you when you’re hot and popping, but as a famous person, it’s your responsibility to determine what you want.”
Reminisce concluded by urging artists to take control of their environment and be selective about who they allow into their lives. “Not everyone around you wants you to succeed. It’s up to you to set those boundaries and make decisions that protect your future.”
