Nigerian rapper Blaqbonez has advised creatives to remain humble, emphasizing that not every talent will stand the test of time.
He highlighted that early success does not always guarantee longevity in the music industry.
Despite this, Blaqbonez expressed confidence in his career, stating that he would stay relevant for as long as he desired. He credited his unique style, strong work ethic, and loyal fan base as key reasons for his lasting success.
Mocked by a fellow rapper in 2017
Blaqbonez recalled an experience from 2017 when a fellow up-and-coming rapper belittled him in a freestyle performance. The unnamed artist had just been signed to YBNL Nation, the record label founded by Nigerian superstar Olamide.
According to Blaqbonez, the newly signed rapper used his name in a freestyle, saying he would never succeed in the music industry. At the time, the comment was meant to dismiss his chances of making it big.
Although he did not directly name the rapper, fans speculated that he was referring to Limerick, a former YBNL signee.
“You thought Olamide was God?” – Blaqbonez Fires Back
Taking to social media, Blaqbonez reflected on the incident and addressed the rapper directly in a series of tweets.
“Because you got a deal before me, you added my name to your freestyles, saying, ‘You no go ever blow like Blaqbonez.’ All because Olamide signed you, you thought he was God, right?” he wrote.
He continued, “I pray you see these tweets and reflect on your life. Look at how quickly you were ready to bring others down. We were in rap battle groups together for years. But the moment you got signed, you felt the need to insult my work ethic. You thought you could predict the future and decided I would never make it, right?”
“I Know Who I Am” – Blaqbonez on longevity
He used the opportunity to emphasise that not every artist will remain relevant over time.
“Not every kind of talent lasts for years,” he stated. “But I know who I am. I will be here for as long as I want to be. The music I make is unique—nobody else can create it.”
He also showed appreciation for his dedicated fan base. “I have fans who have been with me since the beginning. Not just those who discovered me through ‘Bling’ or other hit songs. The ones I’m talking about know themselves.”
