Nigerian content creator and activist, Adebowale Debo Adedayo, widely recognized as Mr Macaroni, shared profound insights into his journey toward fearless activism following his arrest in 2021.
His story is not just one of personal transformation but also a reflection of the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights in Nigeria.
The backdrop of Mr Macaroni’s transformation can be traced back to the tragic events of October 20, 2020, when peaceful #EndSARS protesters were met with violence at the Lekki Tollgate.
Following this incident, many Nigerian youths expressed their outrage against the decision to reopen the tollgate, which had become a symbol of police brutality and governmental insensitivity.
In February 2021, Mr. Macaroni was arrested during a protest against the tollgate’s reopening, as he defied the Lagos State government’s directive, which many perceived as an attempt to stifle dissent.
This act of civil disobedience showcased the courage of many young Nigerians, rallying together for their rights amidst a pervasive climate of fear.
During his recent conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Mr Macaroni recounted the harrowing experience he faced while in police custody.
What emerged from the depths of his ordeal was a fiery determination to stand up against oppression and advocate for those unable to voice their struggles.
“The day I was arrested, everything changed,” he stated emphatically. Mr Macaroni detailed the psychological and physical trauma he endured in police custody. He revealed, with palpable emotion, that officers had stripped him naked and subjected him to humiliation.
He described how some police officers took pleasure in his suffering, branding him as merely an inconvenience to their authority.
“They stripped us naked, and I was molested. It was as if they found joy in our pain,” he recounted.
However, rather than this experience breaking his spirit, it ignited a fierce resolve within him.
“I feel I should be involved because God has given me the platform today, not to be popular, but to use it to speak up for those that cannot speak for themselves. How can I ask others to make sacrifices that I am not willing to make?” he pondered, revealing the heart of his activism.
The transformation he underwent within the confines of his torment was profound. “All the fear in me disappeared after that experience,” Mr Macaroni shared, reflecting on the intense emotions that flooded through him in the wake of his ordeal.
He noted that witnessing the anger and hatred in the eyes of his captors transformed his perspective entirely.
“It was after these guys tortured me that I saw the hate in their eyes, and I realized what I was fighting against.”
As a creator of skits and socially relevant content, he acknowledges that the artistic portrayals of his experiences can only scratch the surface of the reality he faced.
“The skit I made doesn’t do justice to what I experienced. I had to do it so that people could watch,” he explained, articulating the complex relationship between art and activism.
Although he utilized humour and satire as tools for raising awareness, he emphasized that those moments could never fully encapsulate the true horror of what occurred.

Despite the trauma, Mr. Macaroni remains hopeful for Nigeria’s future. His experience has empowered him to leverage his platform in significant ways that resonate with the younger generation yearning for change.
He acknowledges the collective power of the youth, stating, “We are resilient and we will not be silenced. Our voices matter, and we will continue to advocate for what is right.”
Efforts to suppress dissent may prevail for a time, but Mr. Macaroni’s fervent beliefs stand as a testament to the power of activism.
He underscores the importance of community engagement and solidarity amongst Nigerian youths.
“We must support one another and raise our voices in unison. Every little effort counts,” he encouraged, calling upon his fellow citizens to resist the status quo and push for systemic reform.
As a prominent figure within Nigeria’s creative space, Mr. Macaroni’s story is emblematic of a broader narrative surrounding the struggles faced by those seeking justice and accountability.
While he endures the scars of his experience, he continues to march forward with unwavering strength and determination.
In a time when fear and oppression seek to stifle voices, figures like Mr. Macaroni serve as reminders of the profound impact of activism fueled by personal conviction.
He represents the many Nigerians who dare to dream of a more just society, embodying the resilience and defiance of a generation unwilling to be silenced.
