Veteran Nigerian singer Konga has publicly accused Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy of borrowing his lyrics and rhythm without credit.
In a video shared on his TikTok page, Konga called out Burna Boy for allegedly using his lines in multiple songs, including Sungba Remix and Update. He also made a direct appeal for compensation—requesting a verse from Burna Boy and fellow artist Tiwa Savage on the remix of his song Kabakaba.
Konga calls out Burna Boy
Konga did not hold back in his message. He claimed that Burna Boy name-dropped him in Sungba Remix, a collaboration with Asake, and also used elements of his flow and rhythm in Update. According to Konga, this was not a one-time occurrence but a pattern that he has noticed in Burna Boy’s music.
In the video, he stated, “Burna Boy, this message is for you. You mentioned my name in your song with Asake, Sungba Remix, and now I hear my lines and rhythm in your new release. It’s clear that you like my style and have been using parts of my flow.”
Despite his accusations, Konga maintained a respectful tone. He acknowledged Burna Boy’s success and influence while insisting that he deserved recognition for his contributions.
A demand for collaboration
Rather than taking legal action or issuing threats, Konga took a different approach. He offered a way for Burna Boy to make amends—by featuring on the remix of Kabakaba alongside Tiwa Savage.
He explained his reasoning, saying, “I appreciate that you’re inspired by my craft. I love the fact that my work influences you, but I want you and Tiwa Savage on Kabakaba Remix.“
Konga made it clear that he was not looking for conflict. Instead, he framed his request as a peaceful call for recognition and collaboration. “I will be expecting your feedback. I call you out in peace,” he concluded.
Will Burna Boy respond?
Burna Boy has not yet addressed Konga’s claims. However, given his reputation for confidence and boldness, fans are eager to see if he will respond. Some social media users have speculated that Burna Boy might ignore the call-out, while others believe he could surprise fans by accepting Konga’s offer.
Meanwhile, the discussion around the ownership of lyrics and rhythms in the Nigerian music industry continues. Artists often draw inspiration from older styles, but the question of proper credit and compensation remains a hot topic.
A growing trend in the industry
This is not the first time a Nigerian artist has accused another of borrowing elements of their music. Over the years, many musicians have clashed over similarities in lyrics, melodies, and beats. In an industry that thrives on reinvention and sampling, disputes like this one are becoming more common.
For now, fans will have to wait and see how Burna Boy reacts. Will he collaborate with Konga as requested, or will this turn into a larger controversy? Either way, the conversation around creativity, influence, and originality in Afrobeats is far from over.
