Popular Nollywood actor Chinedu Ikedieze, widely known as “Aki,” has revealed the challenges he faced growing up with stunted growth.
In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, he shared how his diagnosis at age nine led to intense bullying, emotional pain, and even thoughts of suicide.
During the interview, Aki recalled visiting a hospital with his mother after falling sick. The doctor’s words left a lasting impact on him. “The doctor told my mother, ‘Madam, stop worrying. He has no problem. Just make sure he studies and goes to school,’” he said.
At the time, he had never heard the term “stunted growth.” When he saw the words “growth retardation” on his medical report, he struggled to understand what it meant. But as time passed, he heard those words again and again.
Bullied and taunted by peers
The actor’s childhood was far from easy. After his diagnosis, he became a target for bullying. Peers mocked his height and called him names. The constant ridicule took a serious toll on his mental health.
“People taunted me. I cried several times. They called me names. It got so bad that I thought of ending it all,” he admitted.
Despite his pain, he found strength in his mother’s words. She encouraged him to focus on education, telling him it would be his greatest weapon in life. “You are small; you cannot carry cement or do furniture work. The best thing for you is to study,” she would often remind him.
Choosing education over despair
Rather than let the negativity consume him, Aki decided to focus on his studies. He saw education as his only path to success. His determination paid off. He not only performed well in school but also built a successful career in Nollywood.
Today, he is one of Nigeria’s most beloved actors, known for his iconic roles in films and TV series. His journey is a powerful reminder that resilience and hard work can overcome even the toughest challenges.
A message of hope
Aki’s story inspires many who face similar struggles. He wants others who deal with self-doubt and bullying to know that their circumstances do not define their future.
“Obstacles may be painful, but they do not have to determine your destiny,” he said.
Through his success, he hopes to encourage others to keep pushing forward, no matter how difficult the journey may seem.
