Nigerian gospel artiste Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely celebrated for her hit song ‘Omije Ojumi’, has died.
Her passing was confirmed on Tuesday through a brief statement posted on Instagram by fellow gospel singer Ayo Melody on behalf of Bunmi’s family.
The post included a photo of the late singer and a video of her remains, revealing that she passed away in a Lagos hospital.
“With great sadness we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye (OMIJE OJUMI), who passed away on 12th January 2026 at a Lagos hospital in Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest,” the statement read.
Her death comes just months after she had publicly sought prayers while battling a serious leg ailment.
In October 2025, during a service at G.F David Ministries in Ibadan, she was seen in a video seated with her leg extended, receiving prayers from a pastor. An IV cannula attached to her hand highlighted the severity of her condition.
The pastor explained to the congregation that Bunmi had been suffering persistent bleeding in her leg, which he described as a spiritual attack, calling it an “arrow.”
He prayed against the “spirit of death,” commanding it to leave her body.
Bunmi began singing at age 10 and later left a banking career to pursue music full-time. She rose to national prominence with ‘Omije Ojumi’, a song that resonated deeply with Nigerian Christians and became a fixture in churches and homes. She followed up with other inspiring releases, including ‘O Ti Sure’.
Tributes from fans and colleagues have already begun to pour in following the news of her passing, celebrating her contribution to gospel music in Nigeria.
