The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has released detailed guidance to help Nigerians distinguish genuine Kiss condoms from counterfeit versions, amid rising concerns over fake products in major markets across the country.
In a public alert issued on Monday (Public Alert No. 042/2025), the agency said reports from DKT International Nigeria, the brand’s official marketing authorisation holder, indicate fake Kiss condoms have been found in markets including Onitsha, Idumota, Trade Fair Market, and cities such as Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, and Enugu.
NAFDAC outlined several key differences between authentic and counterfeit Kiss condoms. Genuine Kiss boxes are lighter in colour, display a visible condom image, and carry complete manufacturer details, storage instructions, and cautionary notes.
In contrast, fake boxes are darker, often lack side information, feature an incorrect or incomplete manufacturer address, and may have a plain white interior without the condom image.
The agency also noted discrepancies in the condom packs themselves. Authentic Kiss condoms are light red, with the brand name printed closely across six lines, and the condoms are oval-shaped, well-lubricated, and have a larger teat end.
Counterfeit condoms, however, are darker, the name is printed across five lines, the strip is longer, and the condoms are thinner, rounder, less lubricated, and have smaller teat ends. Differences also extend to wallet packaging.
Highlighting the health risks, NAFDAC warned that using counterfeit condoms can lead to unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, allergic reactions, and a false sense of protection.
“To ensure safety, only genuine, quality-assured condoms from approved manufacturers should be used,” the agency emphasised.
The regulator said it has instructed zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify market surveillance and remove counterfeit Kiss condoms nationwide.
Consumers and healthcare professionals are encouraged to report suspected cases of substandard or falsified condoms to the nearest NAFDAC office.
