The Ogun and Lagos State governments have confirmed that British-Nigerian boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
In a joint statement issued by the two state governments, it was disclosed that the vehicle conveying Joshua and three other members of his team collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the loss of two lives.
“The vehicle conveying the team of four ran into a stationary truck, resulting in two fatalities,” the statement said.
The governments expressed sympathy to the families of those who died in the accident, describing the incident as tragic and painful.
“We sympathise with the families of those involved in the accident and pray that God will grant them the strength to go through this difficult time,” the statement read.

According to the statement, Anthony Joshua and another passenger survived the crash and were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos for treatment. Medical experts who attended to them carried out several clinical assessments and confirmed that both patients were stable.
“Doctors have conducted several clinical assessments and have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency interventions at this time,” the governments said.
They added that a comprehensive medical team had been assembled to continue monitoring the condition of Joshua and the other survivor to ensure optimal care.
The statement further noted that Joshua has been communicating effectively with his family since the incident, offering reassurance about his condition.
“Anthony Joshua has since been relating well with his family,” it said.
Both state governments assured the public that they were closely monitoring the situation and would ensure that the survivors receive the best possible medical attention.
“The governments of Ogun and Lagos are keenly monitoring the situation and will ensure that the two persons receive the best medical care,” the statement added.
Authorities also confirmed that investigations had commenced to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, as part of efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future.
While acknowledging the widespread public concern generated by the incident, the governments appealed for privacy for the boxer and his family during the recovery period.
“We appreciate the public’s concern and ask for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family during this time,” the statement concluded.
The statement was jointly signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information to the Ogun State Government, and Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information in Lagos State.
