Bauchi State has expanded its child health services by immunising about 3.7 million children during the 2025 Measles/Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign, achieving full coverage of the targeted population and strengthening efforts to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases.
Measles/Rubella (MR) is a viccine use in treating measles, mumps, and rubella, which are highly catigious.
The Information Officer of the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Board, Ibrahim Sani, disclosed this on Monday in Bauchi during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, noting that children aged nine to 59 months were reached across the state, exceeding initial projections.
He described the outcome as a major public health gain, explaining that the campaign sharply reduced the risk of measles and rubella outbreaks while reinforcing routine immunisation uptake.
Beyond immunisation, Sani said the state recorded more than 90% coverage in child survival interventions, reflecting sustained investment in maternal and child health.
He, however added that increased access to reproductive health services, particularly family planning, remained a core priority of the administration.
According to him, the state government in 2025 committed N50 million to procure family planning commodities, a move that has improved access to free and reliable services while addressing unmet needs among women of reproductive age.
On healthcare infrastructure, Sani said 124 primary healthcare facilities were rehabilitated under the World Bank-supported IMPACT Project, equipping centres with modern infrastructure and improved service delivery spaces.
He noted that although six facilities were damaged by windstorms, the overall investment of about N7.1 billion had enhanced the resilience and functionality of PHCs across the state.
He further disclosed that N872 million had been approved for the 2025 Primary Healthcare Memorandum of Understanding Basket Fund, aimed at sustaining ongoing reforms and strengthening service delivery at the grassroots.
In the area of disease prevention, Sani said the board carried out mass administration of Azithromycin in partnership with MITOSATH and other organisations, targeting communities with high disease burden to curb the spread of infectious illnesses.
He also said capacity building remained central to the reforms, with 57 personnel trained under the National Training-of-Trainers programme, who subsequently trained 1,292 health workers across 323 primary healthcare centres.
Sani said the combined investments in infrastructure, workforce development and service expansion had improved care quality and positioned Bauchi State as a reference point for primary healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
