King Charles III and Prince William are expected to make separate visits to the United States in 2026 as part of efforts to revive a stalled UK–US trade agreement, according to reports.
Report revealed that advanced discussions are under way for a visit by the King, which is likely to take place in April. If it goes ahead, it would be the first visit by a reigning British monarch to the US since Queen Elizabeth II travelled there in 2007.
Prince William is expected to visit later in the year during the football World Cup, which will be hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico between June and July. His trip would be in his role as president of the Football Association, with England set to play a group match in New Jersey on 27 June.
The reported visits come after the US paused a multibillion-pound investment deal in British technology amid trade disagreements. The £31bn agreement, announced during Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK, included major investment pledges from US tech firms such as Microsoft and Google.
Washington later put the deal on hold, citing slow progress by the UK in reducing trade barriers. The move was seen as a setback for the British government, which had promoted the agreement as a major diplomatic success.
Downing Street said earlier this month that talks with the US were still ongoing, although it admitted negotiations were proving difficult. Disagreements reportedly remain over Britain’s digital services tax and access for US agricultural products to UK markets.
The prime minister is not expected to join the King on his visit. Instead, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper is likely to represent the governments.
