The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the timetable and schedule of activities for bye-elections to fill vacancies in the Ahoada East II and Khana II State Constituencies of Rivers State.
In a press statement issued on Monday, 22nd December 2025, following a meeting, the Commission confirmed that the polls will take place on Saturday, 21st February 2026 the same date as the end-of-tenure Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The bye-elections became necessary under Section 116 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers INEC to conduct elections to fill vacancies in state assemblies.
The vacancy in Ahoada East II arose from the resignation of the sitting member, while Khana II’s seat became vacant following the death of its representative.
The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has formally notified INEC of both vacancies.

Key dates in the approved timetable are as follows:
– Publication of official notice of election: 22nd January 2026
– Conduct of party primaries, including resolution of disputes: 23rd–27th January 2026
– Commencement of public campaigns by parties and candidates: 8th February 2026
– End of campaigns: 19th February 2026
– Election day: 21st February 2026
INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible bye-elections in line with constitutional provisions and its established guidelines.
