Aston Villa made history with a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Villa Park, securing 10 competitive victories in a row for the first time in over a century. It was just their second win in the last 27 top-flight home meetings against the Red Devils.
Villa created early chances, with Senne Lammens denying John McGinn and teenager Ayden Heaven producing a last-ditch block to stop Ollie Watkins. Ian Maatsen also tested United from a corner, with Morgan Rogers’ flick narrowly missing the target.
United grew into the game, with Benjamin Šeško forcing Emiliano
Martínez into a save, but Villa struck first when Rogers cut in from the left and curled a stunning effort into the top-right corner.
On the stroke of halftime, United were gifted an equalizer when Matty Cash lost possession to Patrick Dorgu, allowing Matheus Cunha to finish with a precise shot.
Bruno Fernandes’ injury early in the second half forced Ruben Amorim to move Lisandro Martínez into midfield. United’s reshuffle couldn’t prevent Villa from regaining the lead, as Rogers curled in a second near-identical strike.
Moments later, Dorgu set up Cunha, who astonishingly headed wide from six yards.
United handed debuts to youngsters Shea Lacey and Jack Fletcher, with Lacey testing Martínez late on, but Villa held on to assert themselves as genuine title contenders. United, meanwhile, saw their momentum stall, with injuries adding to their growing challenges in the European race.
