The newly inaugurated Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, has pledged to support student talent development during a visit to his alma mater, the University of Jos (UNIJOS).
His visit coincided with the ongoing 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games hosted by the university.
Doro, who paid a courtesy visit to the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, said his visit was a show of solidarity with the institution where his journey began.
He emphasised his commitment to promoting student talent, describing NUGA as a vital platform for discovering and nurturing future stars.
“This is where talent is being harnessed,” Doro stated, underscoring the importance of the games.
He assured that he would explore every possible avenue to secure federal government support for NUGA activities, adding that such initiatives deserved sustained national backing.
“By coming here today, I am saying we are with you, and we will continue to offer our support,” he affirmed.
Expressing pride in his alma mater, the minister acknowledged UNIJOS for laying the foundation for his professional and personal growth.
In his remarks, Professor Ishaya thanked President Bola Tinubu for appointing their distinguished alumnus to head a key ministry.
He noted that the President’s choice of Doro, a UK-based pharmacist, was not just a political decision but one rooted in merit, expressing confidence that he would exceed expectations.
The Vice Chancellor also assured the minister of the university’s unwavering support, saying the management stood ready to assist him in achieving success in his new role.
This year’s NUGA Games, themed “Unity, Play in Peace,” drew 4,181 athletes from universities across Nigeria to compete in 23 sports disciplines, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, and e-sports.
The opening ceremony, held at the J.T. Useni Stadium featured a colourful display of cultural performances, marching contingents, and the official lighting of the NUGA torch, setting the stage for an exciting festival of sports and unity.
During his address, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development through sports.
