Popular Nigerian comedian, Seyi Law, has responded sharply to Shehu Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, after he described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a drug baron.
The controversy began after U.S. President Donald Trump made a scathing remark about Nigeria, calling it a “now disgraced country” while threatening possible military intervention over alleged Christian persecution.

Trump’s comment sparked widespread debate online, with the hashtag #DisgracedCountry trending across social media as Nigerians expressed mixed reactions, some condemning Trump’s statement, others blaming the country’s leadership for its global image.
Reacting to the uproar, Shehu Abubakar criticized Nigerians who were angered by Trump’s comment, saying the country had lost its moral right to feel insulted. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Why are some upset that Donald Trump called us disgraceful? When they announced a drug baron as our President, what do you call that? Prideful? I know it hurts our pride as a nation but we have to first look inwards & hold ourselves accountable before we accuse outsiders.”
His remark immediately drew backlash, especially from supporters of the ruling party. One of the most prominent responses came from Seyi Law, a vocal Tinubu loyalist, who accused Shehu of hypocrisy and questioned his moral standing to criticize the president.
In his fiery reply on X, Seyi Law referenced past allegations involving Shehu’s father, Atiku Abubakar, who was accused of corruption and money laundering during his time as Nigeria’s vice president under Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
He wrote:
“This is coming from someone whose father was called a thief by his principal and indicted as a money launderer in the US. Someone whose father deleted his handler’s tweet about the extra-judicial killing of Deborah. Na really wa.”
Seyi Law’s response has reignited online political debates, with Nigerians divided along partisan lines. While Tinubu’s supporters praised the comedian for defending the president, critics accused him of deflecting attention from serious allegations about Tinubu’s past.

The exchange adds to the growing tension between supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), as both camps continue to trade barbs on social media.
As of the time of filing this report, Shehu Abubakar has yet to respond to Seyi Law’s remarks.
