The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its determination to stamp out the production and circulation of fake and substandard drugs in Nigeria, following the ongoing destruction of more than 80 containers of counterfeit medicines and food items across the country.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos on Saturday, the Director of Investigation and Enforcement and Chairman of the Federal Task Force, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, said the large-scale destruction exercise was part of the agency’s intensified crackdown on illicit products that endanger public health.
Iluyomade decried the moral decay and profit-driven motives fuelling the trade in counterfeit goods, warning that NAFDAC would not relent in its mission to cleanse Nigerian markets of such harmful products.

He revealed that recent enforcement operations had become increasingly dangerous, citing a violent attack on NAFDAC officials at the Lagos Trade Fair market on October 30, 2025, during which several operational vehicles were vandalised.
According to him, the agency’s enforcement teams remain undeterred despite the risks involved, as protecting the lives of Nigerians remains their top priority.
He commended the Nigeria Customs Service, led by Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi, for its support in intercepting and handing over containers of fake products for destruction.
Iluyomade also praised the Nigeria Police and the military for their cooperation during the operation, reiterating NAFDAC’s commitment to reducing the prevalence of substandard and counterfeit products to the barest minimum in line with the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act.
He assured Nigerians that the agency would sustain its nationwide surveillance and enforcement campaign to ensure that only safe and quality-assured products are available in the market.
