The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protests, describing them as a “dangerous display of reckless politics” orchestrated by opposition figures.
In a statement issued on Monday, 20 October 2025, the party accused detractors of exploiting the call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to sow chaos and division.
APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo likened the protests to a Biblical deception, stating, “This is the hand of Jacob and the voice of Esau,” suggesting that opposition leaders are manipulating the situation for political gain.
He argued that the protests are not a genuine cry for justice but a desperate attempt by those “roundly rejected” at the polls to regain relevance through street agitations.
Oladejo expressed dismay at the insensitivity of the protest organisers, particularly in light of the South East’s prolonged struggles with violence, kidnappings, and enforced sit-at-home orders.
“The South East is still bleeding,” he said, highlighting the region’s suffering, including traders unable to operate, children deprived of education, and families torn apart by insecurity.
He accused the protest sponsors of betraying the region’s people by reigniting division instead of fostering healing.
The APC emphasised that Nnamdi Kanu’s case is a judicial matter, asserting confidence in Nigeria’s independent judiciary to deliver justice without mob pressure.
The party also praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which it said promotes inclusivity and development, with the South East benefiting from key appointments and infrastructure projects.
Calling for unity, the Lagos APC urged security agencies to remain vigilant and appealed to South East leaders to reject divisive tactics.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us,” Oladejo stressed, warning against allowing “political desperation” to undermine national progress.
The statement concluded with a plea for an end to “bitter politics,” urging Nigerians to prioritise peace and cooperation to build a stronger nation.
