The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has elected Alhaji Aliyu Halidu as its new state chairman following a keenly contested election during the party’s state congress in Minna.
Halidu secured 1,289 votes, narrowly defeating his rival, Yahaya Abdullahi (Ability), who polled 1,260 votes.
Other elected officials include Hadi Kuta as State Secretary and Mrs Salomi Ndakosu as Woman Leader, who won with 1,373 votes against Mrs Ramotu Jibrin’s 590 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Halidu called for unity among party members, emphasising the need for collective effort to restore the PDP’s prominence in Niger State.
He expressed confidence in the party’s ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, urging members to mobilise for success starting with the upcoming local government elections in November 2025.
“We must work together to reposition the PDP and ensure victory at all levels,” Halidu stated, rallying supporters to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures.
The congress, marked by a competitive yet peaceful process, signals the PDP’s intent to rebuild its influence in Niger State after losing ground to the APC in recent elections.
Halidu’s leadership is expected to focus on reconciling factions and galvanising support to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.
