Top opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, convened in Abuja on Thursday for a stakeholders’ meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
The gathering, aimed at strategising to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, signals a significant political realignment.
Atiku, a key figure in the coalition, announced the meeting via his official Facebook page, describing it as a convergence of Nigerians against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of promoting poverty and insecurity.
“It’s a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land,” he wrote.
The ADC, now led by David Mark as interim national chairman, has emerged as the coalition’s platform to challenge the APC’s dominance.
The meeting, attended by other prominent opposition figures, underscores efforts to consolidate support and mobilise voters ahead of 2027.
While the full agenda remains undisclosed, the focus is reportedly on strengthening the party’s position for the upcoming polls.
This development follows recent defections from the APC, including loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting cracks within the ruling party.
