Vice-President Kashim Shettima will represent Nigeria at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, scheduled to hold from September 22 to 28, 2025.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communications, Shettima will be leading the delegation on the instruction of President Bola Tinubu.
The vice-president will be part of the UN’s 80th anniversary commemoration on September 22 and will join other global leaders at the high-level general debates running from September 23 to 28.
“On behalf of President Tinubu, VP Shettima will also deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24 between 3:00pm and 9:00pm, New York time,” Nkwocha stated.
He added that Shettima would participate in a climate-focused event hosted by the UN Secretary-General on September 24, where Nigeria is expected to unveil its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
Beyond climate discussions, the VP will join a high-level roundtable on adequate and affordable housing hosted by the Kenyan president and hold bilateral meetings with fellow leaders.
After the UNGA, the vice-president will continue to Frankfurt, Germany, for talks with officials of Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.
