Barcelona and Spain legend, Andrés Iniesta has announced his plans to call quits on his playing career come October 8. The date is a tribute to the midfielder’s iconic jersey number.
The former Barca midfielder turned 40 this year and has been playing football for more than two decades, a significant portion of which he spent with the Catalan Giants after coming up the club’s youth system. He earned 674 appearances for Barcelona between 2002 and 2018 when he left the club, scoring 57 goals in the process. His stellar career is full of glorious highlights including four Champions League titles, nine LaLiga championships and six Copa del Rey triumphs.
Iniesta was part of the iconic Spain national team that dominated European and world football from the late 2000s till the early 2010s, winning two Euro Championships and one World Cup Trophy. Perhaps the most important moment in his career came when he scored Spain’s winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final against Netherlands.
Iniesta left Barca in 2018 to play for Japanese side Vissel Kobe, before subsequently moving to Emirates Club in the UAE. As he plans to retire from playing football, there are speculations about the path he might take next. He has previously expressed his desire to be back at his boyhood club in some capacity, which may include as a coach. His former teammate Xavi Hernandez coached Barca from November 2021 to May 2024, winning a LaLiga championship and a Supercopa de España title. A similar future at the club may be awaiting Iniesta.
