The Bayelsa Queens, reigning champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League, secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana’s Police Ladies FC at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium. This match represented a competitive encounter between two West African rivals.
The Prosperity Girls, who recently triumphed in the 2024/25 NWFL season by defeating Naija Ratels 4-1 in the final round of the Super Six playoffs, commenced their campaign in the West Africa Football Union Zone B CAF Qualifiers, which are being hosted in Ivory Coast.
Shakirat Moshood, a standout player for the Falconets, opened the scoring for Bayelsa Queens in the 12th minute with a precise finish.
Her performance earned her the Player of the Match award, helping the team establish a 1-0 lead at halftime. Emem Essien extended the advantage with a composed finish in the 62nd minute.
The Police Ladies mounted a determined response, reducing the deficit in the 67th minute through a goal from Mercy Berko.
In addition to pursuing qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League, the Bayelsa Queens aim to reclaim the regional title, having previously won the tournament during its second edition in 2022. Edo Queens secured the 2024 tournament title by defeating Ainonvi FC of the Benin Republic 3-0 in the final.
