US President Donald Trump has announced that the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place on December 5 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Trump made this known in the oval office alongside FIFA president, Gianni Infantino and vice-president JD Vance.
The tournament will commence on June 11 at Mexico City’s Ateca stadium and will end on July 19 at MetLife Stadium New Jersey. The Co-hosts of the finals are the US, Canada, and Mexico
A total of 104 matches will be played across 16 host cities. Meanwhile, Washington D.C. will host the draw.
The draw is made up of 48 teams divided into 12 groups of Four, and will see the 48 teams divided into 12 groups of Four. Afterwards, the top two teams from the groups and the eight best third – place teams will advance to the knockout stages.
When asked about the possibility of taking part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, President Donald Trump described the idea as “very interesting,” but clarified that the decision lies with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, adding, “He’s the boss.”
Trump also addressed security concerns for the December 5 event, assuring the public that extensive safety measures are being put in place. These will include heightened security protocols, National Guard deployment, and federal law enforcement support to guarantee a secure environment for the ceremony at the Kennedy Center.
However, Gianni Infantino hailed the draw as a defining moment in soccer history, emphasizing the event’s unifying power and Washington’s cultural status.
“We are excited to host the most anticipated Final Draw for the FIFA World Cup in history in the cultural and entertainment heart of the United States, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The draw is a major tournament milestone and one that will continue the remarkable build-up to the biggest sporting event ever, as we get set for many landmark FIFA events across North America throughout 2026. ” he said.
FIFA opens preparation offices
In addition, FIFA has established preparation offices in Miami and Trump Tower in New York to coordinate the extensive logistical requirement.
Also, fans from each of the 16 host cities across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. will be eligible for a special lottery offering complimentary tickets and VIP access to the event.
