A senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Umar Sani, has expressed doubts over the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, keeping his promise to serve only one term if elected president.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Sani acknowledged Obi’s integrity but warned that pressure from his supporters might prevent him from honouring the pledge.
“Mr Peter Obi could be very sincere, you know. But the issue is not about Obi’s integrity; it’s about how he panders to his supporters,” Sani said. “His supporters will not agree [to the one term] because the Constitution allows two terms. If his first term performance is impressive, they will urge him to continue.”
The comment comes in response to Obi’s July 1, 2025, declaration that if elected in the 2027 elections, he would serve only a single four-year term. Obi stated, “I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance.”

Sani’s remarks have further fuelled ongoing debates about the feasibility of such a promise within Nigeria’s political landscape.
On the same platform, Sani suggested that the PDP’s best presidential candidate remains former president Goodluck Jonathan, highlighting the importance of selecting a candidate who can unite the northern region.
“So we are not looking at Jonathan from the promised angle. That has been resolved. The law has already taken care,” he added.
The discourse continues as stakeholders evaluate the implications of Obi’s commitment amid Nigeria’s complex political realities.
