Nigerian actress and filmmaker Debbie Shokoya has opened up about the deep impact her parents have had on her life and career.
In an emotional Instagram post, she credited them for shaping her into a strong, focused, and content woman.
According to the actress, her parents didn’t just raise her, they built the foundation that has helped her stay grounded through the highs and lows of life. She described them as the reason she can face challenges with calm and confidence.
“My parents walked so I could run. Now, I’m running so my children can fly,” Debbie wrote, reflecting on her journey so far. She went on to share that her upbringing was filled with lessons that money can’t buy. These include the values of contentment, sincerity, hard work, spiritual grounding, and staying focused on one’s goals.
Debbie, who is now a mother, described contentment as one of the greatest gifts her parents passed down to her. She believes that having contentment brings more peace and wealth than material riches.
“I move like I’m perfect and unbothered by competition,” she wrote. “This is because I was taught the act of contentment from an early stage. I have lived with it, and I have mastered it.”
The actress acknowledged that her success did not come overnight. She revealed that she started from scratch and built everything she has today, one step at a time. There were difficult moments along the way, she admitted times when it felt like things might fall apart. But thanks to the strong values and resilience her parents instilled in her, she never gave up.
“I built everything to this point, brick by brick,” she explained. “There were times when it felt like part of the building was collapsing, but what do they say about a good foundation? I stand tall always.”
Debbie added that her parents raised her in a way that made her unshaken by obstacles or pressure from others. She credited their teachings for helping her stay true to herself, regardless of the expectations or noise around her.
“My parents built me to this point where I feel unshaken,” she continued. “I just stay focused.”
Optimistic Debbie expresses future hope
Beyond her personal growth, the actress also expressed hopes for the future particularly for her children. She said she wants to be a source of pride to them, just as her parents have been for her. She prayed that her home would always be a place of safety, love, and truth.
“I pray and hope that someday, my children will brag about how I trained them and positively impacted their lives,” she said. “I pray that I will make them proud, and also be proud of them. I pray that my home will forever be a safe place for us. And I pray that I will continue to be the real me, because I love how truthful I am with myself.”
Debbie Shokoya’s heartfelt message struck a chord with many of her followers, who praised her honesty and celebrated the strength of family values. Through her post, she reminded others that true wealth lies not in money, but in the values passed down from one generation to the next.
