Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its coalition partners to remain steadfast and committed to the collective vision of unity, progress, and national development.
He warned against abandoning the party over internal disagreements, urging party faithful to confront challenges with resilience and shared purpose.
Governor Makinde made the remarks on Friday during the PDP South West Zonal Caucus meeting held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The meeting brought together party leaders, stakeholders, and elected officials from across the region to deliberate on the party’s direction, strategies, and cohesion ahead of future political contests.
Using a metaphor that resonated strongly with attendees, Makinde said, “You can’t abandon your house because of a leaking roof.”
He added:
“The PDP is built on solid foundations, and like any structure, it may experience wear and tear. It is our responsibility as party members to fix the leaks, reinforce the foundation, and ensure the house remains standing for the people of this country.”

Makinde, who has been a key figure in efforts to reform and reposition the PDP nationally, emphasised the importance of internal dialogue, discipline, and inclusivity in resolving disputes.
He noted that political parties everywhere face internal challenges, but abandoning ship at the slightest crack weakens the democratic system and undermines long-term goals.
“Political challenges are inevitable, but the solution is not desertion — it’s dedication. We must have the courage to rebuild and the humility to listen to one another,” he said.
The governor also praised the dedication and sacrifices of party leaders and grassroots members who have remained committed to the PDP through difficult times. He urged them to double their efforts in mobilising support, fostering internal unity, and strengthening the party’s presence at the local and national levels.
“Let us fix the roof together and keep this house strong for the future,” he concluded, drawing applause from the audience.

The PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, has been working to resolve internal disagreements and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections. In the South West, where political alliances and voter dynamics are constantly shifting, party cohesion remains critical.
Party officials at the meeting echoed Makinde’s sentiments, pledging to deepen engagement and rebuild trust among members across all levels.
As Nigeria continues to face economic and governance challenges, the opposition’s ability to present a united and credible alternative is seen as vital by many political observers.
Governor Makinde’s appeal reflects a broader push within the PDP to stabilise its ranks and prepare for a stronger national presence in the years ahead.
