The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has donated 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on CNG (Pi-CNG), reaffirming its commitment to promoting cleaner, more sustainable fuel alternatives in Nigeria.
The handover ceremony took place yesterday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, said the donation aligns with the company’s efforts to accelerate the Federal Government’s (FG) gas utilisation and energy transition agenda.
Mr Ojulari emphasised that NNPC Ltd has made significant strides in expanding gas supply infrastructure, distribution channels, and retail outlets.
He added that NNPC Ltd is proud to play a pivotal role in driving the FG’s gas agenda towards a cleaner and more affordable energy future.
Also speaking at the event, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the CNG buses represent more than just transportation—they symbolise economic relief, environmental responsibility, and social equity.
“They signal a future where the ordinary Nigerian can commute safely, affordably, and efficiently,” Mr Ekpo said, describing the initiative as a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at reducing transport costs and minimising dependence on petrol.
Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd, Mumuni Dagazau, highlighted the economic advantages of CNG adoption.
He noted its potential to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on petrol and diesel while creating savings and stimulating growth in the domestic gas sector.
Similarly, Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, said the company would remain at the forefront of CNG commercialisation efforts.
