Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has earned a place in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Team of the Tournament following a stellar performance throughout the competition in Egypt.
The 19-year-old centre-back was ever-present for Nigeria, playing every minute of the team’s six matches and scoring once as the Flying Eagles secured a bronze medal. His consistency and leadership stood out, earning him widespread praise from fans and analysts alike.
Bameyi, who plays his club football for Bayelsa United, also claimed the Man of the Match award in Nigeria’s second group game against Tunisia—a performance that further solidified his reputation as one of the competition’s most reliable defenders. He had earlier been named in the Team of the Group Stage, underscoring his high-level displays across the tournament.
South Africa and Morocco, who finished as tournament champions and runners-up respectively, dominated the Best XI with four players each. Other notable inclusions were Sierra Leone’s Momoh Kamara, who won the Golden Boot with four goals, and Egypt’s dynamic midfielder Mohamed Goweily.
The Coach of the Tournament award went to South Africa’s Raymond Mdaka, who led his team to their maiden U-20 AFCON title in impressive fashion.
For Bameyi, the recognition is a testament to his growth as a player and leader. As Nigeria looks ahead to the FIFA U-20 World Cup later this year, his presence will be crucial in anchoring the defense and inspiring the team on the global stage.
