Famous Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about her political future, revealing that she is determined to run again despite her earlier defeat at the polls.
In a recent interview, Akindele, who ran as deputy governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State during the 2023 elections, confirmed her political ambition is far from over.
Her team lost to Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but the defeat has not discouraged her.

Tye actress, known across Nigeria for her hit films and comedy series, surprised many when she stepped into politics in 2022. She joined the PDP ticket as the running mate to Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, in the Lagos State governorship race.

“I need to support, I need to give back,” Akindele said during the interview. “That’s why I went into politics.”
She admitted that the political landscape was rougher than she had expected. “Getting into it, seeing violence and shouting,” she recalled, “then I started watching female politicians like Mummy Abike Dabiri. The way they speak, the way they command respect and authority. I told myself, you too can do this.”

“I learnt that you have to be bold, courageous, and strong. Fear will only hold you back,” she said. “What will be, will be.”
She also spoke about the knowledge she gained. Being on the campaign trail pushed her to study the country’s political system more closely. “I got educated and acquired more knowledge,” she shared. “Now, when I want to speak, I speak with statistics and data.”
Akindele emphasized that her political involvement has helped her grow personally and professionally. “I’m reading more and knowing more about my country and my state,” she added proudly.

When asked if she plans to run for political office again, Akindele gave a confident answer.
“Oh, yes,” she said with determination. “I am going to do it again.”
