About thirteen persons are said to be missing after two boats collided, killing two fisherwomen in one of the waterways in Bayelsa State.
The spokesperson of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident, stating that one of the boat drivers has been taken into custody for questioning.
New Daily Prime learned that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening along the Anyama-Ijaw–Lobia–Foropa route in Southern Ijaw.
Meanwhile, a source disclosed that divers who were present at the scene conducted a rescue operation for the 13 missing passengers who had boarded the boat.
Further disclosing details, an eyewitness narrated that the Meeting Marine speedboat, heading from Anyama-Ijaw to Lobia and Foropa communities, collided at the Akede community waterfront.
Addressing the accident, the Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria in Bayelsa State, Mr. Ogoniba Ipigansi, said the union and divers are conducting a rescue search for the missing passengers.
The chairman noted that the passengers on board the speedboat were wearing life jackets and expressed hope of hearing news of survivors.
