Nigerians in the UK endure severe weather for crossover church Services, While Britons Celebrate with pubs and fireworks
Celebrations to mark the beginning of a new year have been a tradition for thousands of years, with people around the globe embracing unique customs and rituals to usher in fresh beginnings. January 1st is universally recognized as a time for reflection on the past year and a moment to set aspirations for the future. Despite cultural differences, the shared themes of hope, renewal, and new opportunities make this occasion deeply significant.
In the days leading up to New Year’s Day, people often gather with loved ones, attend places of worship, or join public festivities in parks and squares to welcome the new year. This year, however, the UK’s celebrations faced significant disruptions due to severe weather conditions. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and snow swept across the country, prompting the Met Office to issue multiple warnings. These adverse conditions led to the cancellation of numerous events and created widespread travel challenges.
Weather Challenges
Parts of England experienced up to 100 mm of rain, resulting in widespread flooding that affected homes, businesses, and transportation. Major airports, including Gatwick and Manchester, faced delays and cancellations due to fog and other adverse conditions, leaving many holiday travelers stranded. Despite these obstacles, the spirit of the New Year remained undeterred as people found ways to celebrate.
Nigerian Communities Usher in the New Year
Among the many cultural groups in the UK, Nigerians and other African communities are known for their vibrant New Year’s celebrations. A common tradition is attending crossover church services, which feature heartfelt prayers, praise, and jubilant songs to welcome the year ahead.
Our correspondent visited the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Srong Tower) along Oldham Road, Manchester, to witness one such celebration. By 11 p.m., the church’s parking lot was already full, with cars double-parked as attendees eagerly flocked to the service. Inside, the church was packed to capacity, with congregants standing shoulder to shoulder. Yet, the crowd continued to grow as more people arrived to partake in the spiritually uplifting event.

New Year’s Eve in the City
Meanwhile, in the heart of Manchester, the atmosphere was equally lively but took on a different flavor. Popular pubs and bars around Piccadilly were bustling with activity. Traffic in the area was so congested that ambulance crews were occasionally forced to abandon their vehicles and walk to reach patients. Pubs were filled to capacity, with some charging entry fees of up to £7. Despite the packed venues and hectic traffic, the mood was festive as revelers from all walks of life gathered to count down to midnight.
