Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to position the state as a leader in Nigeria’s livestock development efforts.
The Governor made this declaration while hosting the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, led by Attahiru Jega, at a courtesy visit and stakeholders’ engagement forum held at the New Government House, Rayfield, Jos.
During the meeting, Governor Mutfwang commended President Bola Tinubu for initiating practical measures to revitalize the livestock sector, a move he described as critical for addressing security challenges tied to farmer-herder conflicts and boosting Nigeria’s economic growth.
“I must congratulate Mr President for taking the bull by the horns. If there is anyone more challenged to make this a reality, it is us in Northern Nigeria,” the Governor said.

“This initiative presents opportunities to de-escalate conflicts, create employment, grow our GDP, and advance technological progress.”
Governor Mutfwang emphasised Plateau State’s unique advantages, including its skilled workforce, technical expertise, and conducive climate, as key assets in leading livestock reforms in the country.
He revealed plans to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development by January 2025 to facilitate the transformation.

“We will domesticate this national initiative, taking into account our local peculiarities, and we must move forward together. A secure environment isn’t the presence of soldiers; it’s the absence of soldiers.
“Our focus should be on policies and strategies that de-escalate conflicts while building a progressive, productive, and profitable livestock ecosystem,” he added.
Jega, Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, praised Governor Mutfwang’s commitment and assured him of the committee’s full support in making Plateau a model for livestock development.
“We have assessed Plateau and believe it can lead to the development of livestock in this country. The President established this committee in July 2024 to harness opportunities within the livestock sector. When fully developed, this sector will not only provide employment and boost productivity but also enhance economic growth nationwide”, Jega said.
The committee is currently engaging stakeholders across the country to promote the initiative and identify opportunities for economic and social development within the livestock sector.
Ishaku Bugama, Plateau State Commissioner of Agriculture, also welcomed the committee and reiterated the state’s readiness to drive livestock reforms for the benefit of the nation.
