The Presidency has claimed that former Finance Minister Wale Edun resigned from office due to health issues and was not sacked, as earlier reported in some quarters.
This was made known in a State House press release issued on Wednesday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga clarified that Edun “duly tendered his resignation from office, citing health reasons, before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced his replacement on Tuesday.”
The statement explained that Edun, who turned 70 on Monday, had been dealing with recent ill health and chose to step down on his birthday.

Edun, in his resignation letter, said, “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He further said, “Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future.”
The Presidency also confirmed that the former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, resigned from his position.
Dangiwa, according to the statement, appreciated Tinubu for giving him the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.
Before his exit, Edun paid a final visit to Tinubu at the Presidential Villa. The statement said he held a meeting with Tinubu for about an hour before leaving office to focus on his private business activities.
Edun has a long career in finance and public service. He once served as Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State during Tinubu’s time as governor.
He also worked with the World Bank and co-founded Stanbic IBTC. Over the years, he built strong experience in banking and economic policy.
Tinubu, in the statement, expressed gratitude to both Edun and Dangiwa for their service and contributions to his administration’s economic reform plans and wished them success in their future endeavours.
Taiwo Oyedele has now been appointed as the new Minister of Finance. He has been urged to continue ongoing reforms and strengthen the country’s economic direction.
The statement noted that a new nominee for the housing ministry, Muttaqha Darma, will soon be sent to the Senate for confirmation.
