Former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a strategic political shift ahead of a likely move to another party.
In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa LGA of Kano State, Shekarau said his decision takes immediate effect.
“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.
The former minister explained that the move followed extensive consultations within his political circle, noting that it was part of a broader plan to continue his political career under a different platform.
“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group, to pursue our political career in a different political party,” he added.
Shekarau also appreciated party leaders at the grassroots level for their support during his time in the PDP.
“I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he said.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Kano State PDP chairman and the Nassarawa LGA chairman, formally notifying the party structure of his exit.
His resignation comes after months of speculation tied to the PDP’s internal crisis.
During a recent visit by APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Shekarau had hinted at his departure, describing the PDP as weakened by persistent internal challenges.
“You came at a time we are making final preparations to exit the PDP, which we understand has been severely affected by internal issues,” he said earlier.
He added that his political direction would be guided by what best serves Kano State, stating that his movement, alongside his supporters and Shura Council, is driven by a “Kano First” agenda.
Although there are speculations linking him to the ruling party, Shekarau has yet to publicly confirm his next political destination.
